What we do
African Dowry - the charity wedding gift list that makes a difference!
Help transform the lives of African farmers as part of your celebrations with African Dowry - a wonderful and unique way to celebrate your marriage while also making an incredible difference to some of the poorest people in Africa. It really will make your special day even more memorable!
You can set up a gift list alongside your traditional wedding list, or make it the entire list for your wedding - it's up to you!
There are loads of fantastic ideas, from seeds to shallow wells, and from chickens to starter kits for village vets.
Ethical Action
African Dowry is a charity wedding gift list which enables couples to raise money for FARM-Africa as part of their wedding celebrations.
FARM-Africa is an international charity that aims to reduce poverty in eastern and South Africa. We work in partnership with farmers and herders, helping them to manage their natural resources more effectively and build sustainable livelihoods on their land.
FARM-Africa has projects in Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Southern Sudan. Our work is based on the knowledge that with just a little assistance, African farmers can dramatically improve their own well-being.
Amongst other things, our projects:
- help provide seeds, tools and training so that farmers can grow hardier, better yielding crops
- help provide the tools and training to find water and dig wells so that whole villages have access to safe water close to home
- help provide livestock such as goats, chickens, sheep or camels, according to the needs of the community and the environment
- help train community members to become village vets so that animals don’t succumb to easily-treated diseases
A few ways we're trying to make a difference
Recycling
We recycle as many of our office supplies as we can. Wherever possible, we try to fulfil our ethical products via the internet to reduce our paper usage.
Renewable energy use
In our schools project in Tanzania, we have introduced the use of fuel-efficient stoves.
Water conservation
Water is scarce in much of Africa, and the starting point for many of our projects is water: we train and equip villagers to find water and dig wells so that they can provide their community with long-term access to clean water close to home.
Supporting local producers
We work with farmers in rural areas and help them access markets to sell their products locally.
Supporting fair trade
Many of our projects help farmers market their produce locally to ensure they receive the best price for their products.
Supporting / working with a charity
We are a charity and we try to transform the lives of African farmers – helping them find a way out of poverty, permanently.
Supporting / working with a community / social project
We run our own projects on the ground, working directly with local farmers and their communities.
