"“Eco-friendly weddings are not just the next big thing; they are a natural extension of our concern for the state of the world we live in,” Fewings said. “Global warming and the need to reduce energy consumption are firmly on the agenda now and unless someone suddenly discovers an environmental magic wand, this isn't going to change.”

'Eco weddings were named as one of the top ten marriage trends for 2009 by The Knot magazine. According to Google's Insights for Search service, online searches for "eco-friendly weddings" and "green weddings" have increased by over 5,000 per cent in the last five years in the UK.

The first ever Eco Chic Wedding Show was held earlier this year in Birmingham, books such as the Green Guide to Weddings are available to help ethical brides plan the big day, and websites such as Ethical Weddings (www.ethicalweddings.com) and Green Union (www.greenunion.co.uk) fulfill the same role. Changed days, indeed. The only green thing about my wedding was the colour of my face the morning after.'

The Observer - How green are white weddings?

29 March 2009

'I was an accidental eco bride. I should clarify. The wedding wasn't accidental, just the greenness. The food was local anyway, I happened to like a sample reject organic cotton dress and it was only when a guest complained that the running water had stopped that I realised the venue's pump was run by a wind generator and the wind had dropped.

But that was nearly a decade ago, predating www.greenfinder.co.uk and www.ethicalweddings.com which recently collaborated on the UK's first eco-chic wedding and home show in Birmingham (ecochicweddingandhomeshow.com).'

Green Buyer’s Guide - It’s a nice day for a green wedding

8 September 2008

"Ethical Weddings is a site for those looking to throw a fair trade, green, organic, local, eco-friendly, cruelty-free, recycled wedding! Couples looking to go green on their wedding days can ask experts for advice, explore real-life ethical weddings, and take in tips on how to pull off their own eco-events. Based in the UK, the suppliers listed on the site might not be what US couples are looking for, but the site offers a range of otherwise useful information to get the eco-conscious prepared for their big days."

BBC Green - Green wedding lists

July 2008

"Ethical wedding lists
In the past few years, ethical gift lists have really taken off. Once the preserve of the large department stores there are now many online services, including a growing number that only list products that are sourced ethically.

Katie Fewings, director of the website Ethical Weddings, says that the wedding list in itself is an exercise in waste minimisation. "That's why they were set up in the first place," she says. "You only got what you needed, nothing more." But some couples planning weddings are now taking things further and choosing gifts that support their green principles.

[...]

High Street wedding lists
When Katie Fewings married in 2005 an internet search for ethical wedding lists drew a blank. So she and her husband opted for a John Lewis gift list comprising ethically sourced products. In particular, Fewings looked for gifts that carried the Soil Association logo or the Fairtrade mark.

There is a lot more choice around now, but Fewings still advises couples to talk to mainstream retailers about their desire for an ethical wedding. She believes it will encourage more retailers to introduce ethical gift lists and, more importantly, to step up their efforts to source products ethically."
