Ethics of fake flowers

The question

Are fake flowers more or less ethical than real flowers? Are there any ethical fake flowers for weddings on the market? I'm thinking it would be nice to have something to keep or give as gifts.

The answer

Thank you for your question - it's a good one!

If you haven't already, I'd take a look and perhaps pose your question in the Flowers topic on our Ethical Weddings Forum.  There are 22 posts in there and everyone who has posted will get an email when you add your post so you should get some responses pretty soon!

The main issues around fake flowers will stem from (excuse the pun) what they are made from. If they are made from silk, which they often are, then there is the issue of the silkworms being killed in the process (although wild silk can avoid this) - take a look at some of the discussions on silk in the Ethical Weddings Forum.

It would be great to get flowers made from fair trade fabrics.  One of our suppliers was looking into this a while ago so we'll try to put you in touch.  Good luck with your search!
